Gregor Mendel (20 de julho de 1822 — 6 de janeiro de 1884) foi um biólogo e botânico austríaco.
- Admite-se de bom grado que pelo cultivo se favorece a origem de novas variedades, e que pelo trabalho do homem se adquirem muitas variedades que, em condições naturais, se perderiam; mas nada justifica a suposição de que a tendência à formação de variedades é tão extraordinariamente aumentada que as espécies perdem rapidamente toda a estabilidade e seus descendentes divergem em uma série infinita de formas extremamente variáveis. Se a mudança nas condições fosse a única causa da variabilidade, poderíamos esperar que aquelas plantas cultivadas durante séculos sob condições quase idênticas atingiriam novamente a constância.
